Are Baby Showers Getting Out of Hand?

Baby showers have seem to become the second biggest event for families after a wedding. They are no longer a simple family gathering where only the women closest to the mom to be, open gifts and play cheesy games. These days, showers are planned to a tee. It is more popularly a coed event ~ and the dads, grandads, uncles and other male family members and friends join in for the festivities. When did baby showers become such a big deal? And why? Well I’m sure many people will agree that this type of event can be lots of fun with the right tools- from what the mom to be is wearing down to the cutesy colored themed shower based on the baby’s sex. The creativity of baby showers are endless!

Some cultures believe that having a shower after the baby is born is more suitable for mom and baby.  However, it has been more popular for moms to throw a party for baby 1 month or two before baby arrives. Perhaps it is a fun way to prepare for baby with all the wonderful (and expensive) gifts that will be provided by friends and loved ones.

What are your thoughts on baby showers? Too much? Or Very necessary?
